Friday Food Bites: Sideswipe Brewing announces closure, Maudine’s open at The Junto, Colin’s Coffee closing

July 6, 2023

There’s always a lot happening in the Columbus restaurant world! Here’s the latest:

  • Owner Craig O’Herron announced last week that Sideswipe Brewing would close on July 30. He said that the brewery, located at 2419 Scioto Harper Dr., would celebrate with one final party on July 22. O’Herron also shared on social media that a new brewer has purchased the space from him and will open a new brewery there. (Get a look at Sideswipe, along with a couple other bygone Columbus breweries, in this 2016 post about the Columbus Ale Trail.)
  • Gahanna’s Marlow’s Cheesesteaks is the latest business to pop up at The Hatch incubator space at Budd Dairy Food Hall. They’ll open up on Tuesday, July 11 at 4 p.m.
  • A second eatery at the new Junto hotel downtown, Maudine’s, opened last week. Named for the Holstein cow who was voted Ohio State’s homecoming queen in 1926, Maudine’s is an all-day coffee shop and cafe, serving One Line Coffee for espresso drinks, brewed coffee, cold brew, plus pastries and breakfast sandwiches.
  • Owner Colin Gawel of Colin’s Coffee announced that the shop, located at 3714 Riverside Dr. in the Golden Bear Center will close on Aug. 20 of this year.
  • The owners of Wario’s Beef & Pork teased the name and rough opening of their new concept coming to Jackie O’s on Fourth. Goood Friends is set to open sometime in August.
  • Yesterday Kennedy’s Kakes celebrated its grand opening at 310 S. High St., in the Westin Hotel storefront.
  • On Thursday, July 20 you can join Columbus Food Adventures for a culinary tour of Africa at Riziki Swahili Grill. Owner Riziki Yussuf will serve dishes from a variety of African countries. Get tickets to the five-course dinner through Columbus Food Adventures’ site by searching July 20 on their calendar on the front page.
  • Business First reported that Connecticut-based Mecha Noodle Bar will replace the Short North White Castle location at 965 N. High St.
  • This Sunday, July 9, chef Laura Pipia is offering another SoHud Squirrels pop-up on Summit Street just south of Hudson. She’ll serve a variety of baked goods starting at 9 a.m. until noon (or she sells out). Check out @doctorwhich on Instagram for more details.
  • In case you missed it, 17 Arrows Craft Kitchen & Bar has opened at Polaris location of the Hilton. It’s open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and emphasizes Ohio ingredients when possible.
  • The Gallo’s restaurant group announced that it will be adding a new concept, Gallo’s Pizza Cucina & Bar, to 5851 Frantz Rd. in Dublin. The concept grew out of its pizzeria in North Market Bridge Park.
