5 Restaurants to Try This Month: December 2021

December 1, 2021

Want to support local restaurants this December? Curious about new openings or under-the-radar finds? Here are five restaurants I’m suggesting you try this month!

1. Restaurant Silla

Silla is a hidden gem, a quiet little Korean eatery with a side entrance down an alleyway in a northwest-side strip mall. Every time we eat there, I find myself wondering why we’re not there all the time. We haven’t had a bad dish at Silla, but we love the young-ja mandu (fried dumplings with vegetables – pictured above), pork bulgogi, and dolsot bibimbap.

2. Smash Brothers Sliders

I’m always up for a burger! Smash Brothers is indeed owned by three brothers, and they start slinging sliders and tots at The Ohio Taproom in Grandview on December 2. The pop-up runs Thursdays-Saturdays from 5-9 p.m. through March 5. It makes for a perfect pairing, honestly: a box of sliders and a selection from the taproom’s all-Ohio draft list.

3. Cambridge Tea House

We don’t have a lot of great tea houses in Columbus, which makes places like the Cambridge Tea House all the more valuable. Situated in Marble Cliff, this cozy tea house is warm and welcoming. They ply you with fresh Harney & Sons’ teas, homemade scones, quiche, omelets, salads, sandwiches. You can also book an afternoon tea, including their special Holiday Tea on Dec. 11. 4. The Pit BBQ Grille

A creation by four Ohio State friends, including a couple football alums, The Pit BBQ Grille has grown to three locations: Parsons Avenue, High Street in Clintonville, and in North Market Bridge Park. They’ve rightfully earned fans for their brisket, pulled pork and chicken, ribs – but the real favorite is the Polish Boy (pictured above). It’s their take on the Cleveland signature, a beef Polish sausage heaped with fresh-cut fries, slaw, and Pit sauce in a bun.

5. Yappy Greek

Yappy Greek is a new discovery for us, just minutes from our home on the northeast side of Worthington. The business is currently surrounded by lots of road construction, but they’re still easily accessible, and judging by recent lunch crowds, they’ve still got a big following. The casual corner spot bustles with activity, as the owners hustle around the open kitchen. So far, we can recommend the classic gyro, the spicy feta dip, the hummus, and the spanakopita (pictured above). They also offer a happy hour special and certain deals with online orders.
