There’s always a lot happening in the Columbus restaurant world! Here’s the latest:

First, a special note: it’s time for the Columbus Arts Festival this weekend! I’ll be downtown on the riverfront working social media for it (make sure you’re following @ColumbusArtsFest on Instagram to see all the fun). There will be nearly 40 food trucks, boozy slushies from High Bank Distillery, beers from Rhinegeist, lemon shake-ups, and a lot more culinary fun, on top of all the visual art, performances, kid’s activities, and demonstrations. I hope to see you there!

  • Bear’s Bagels opens its first storefront this morning at 4142 Main St. in Hilliard. They’ve been appearing at the Dublin Market for a while, and this marks the move to a brick and mortar. They’ll be selling bagels, schmears, and sandwiches.
  • The Peanut Shoppe downtown has been sold to new owners, who are moving it across Capitol Square to 4 E. Broad St. this September. The Stone family has owned it since 1996 (and worked there since 1972), and they’ve sold it to the Powells. The move will mark the fifth location downtown for the shop, which first opened in 1935! (You can read my article on them on Ohio.org last year.)
  • Cameron Mitchell Restaurants’ newest local eatery, Del Mar, is set to open at 4089 The Strand East at Easton town center on Tuesday, June 11. The Mediterranean-focused Del Mar takes over the former Bon Vie space. CMR operates Del Mar locations in Naples, Florida and a forthcoming one in West Palm Beach.
  • The city of Hilliard announced recently that Drunch Eatery + Bar will add a second location in the TruePointe development coming next year. Drunch operates its first location at 995 N. Fourth St. in Italian Village.
  • A churro-centric shop called Oh Churros opened last week at 2110 W. Henderson Rd. in Upper Arlington. (This is the former Peace, Love, and Little Donuts location.)
  • The Columbus Summer Wine Festival returns on Saturday, June 8 at McFerson Commons. There will be a collection of 30 wineries, live music, and vendors from the Front Street Flea.
  • The Columbus Natural Wine Fest returns for a second year this Sunday, June 9 on West Gay Street downtown, underneath the Current installation. It will feature a dozen local wine shops and restaurants, lots of natural wines, and food from Avishar Barua and B.J. Lieberman.
  • Talita’s Burritos and Coneys announced last week that it has closed its location at 6542 Hayden Run Rd. in Hilliard. Their location at 1335 Dublin Rd. is still open.
  • The owners of Mardi Gras Homemade Ice Cream at 1947 Hard Rd. shared on Facebook that after 25 years running it, they have sold the shop to new owners.

With the return of warm weather, the food trucks have returned to the Columbus Commons! In addition to the Thursday Food Truck Food Court, you can snag breakfast, coffee, and donuts at the Commons every Wednesday from 7:30-10:30 a.m.

Wednesdays they feature a rotation of 3-4 food trucks with a variety of foods, whether you just want coffee and a light snack, or need a heartier breakfast to start the day.

New this year is the Columbus Coffee Company, which serves up hot coffee, cold brew, flavored lattes, lemonades, and other beverages.

I’m a sucker for a good nitro cold brew, and I love that they have it on tap.

Also new this year is the Roaming Rooster food truck.

They feature a variety of breakfast sandwiches, bowls, and French toast nuggets.

I tried a breakfast sandwich with chorizo, over medium eggs, and tomatoes.

And an order of the French toast nuggets topped blueberry jam, lemon sugar, and a sweet cream drizzle. They also feature savory versions topped with a fried egg, meat, and gravy.

Donna’s Delicious Dozen also makes appearances with their truck.

They fry up small cake donuts and cover them with fun toppings.

And Biscuit Boss is on hand serving their giant biscuit sandwiches, biscuits and gravy, and sides.

You can go all-in with their Bodacious sandwich: sausage, bacon, egg, cheese, and a honey butter sauce, served between two biscuits and drizzled with syrup and powdered sugar.

While you’re there, you can take a stroll around the Commons!

Breakfast at the Commons is every Wednesday, May through October, from 7:30-10:30 a.m.!

Food trucks may rotate, but you can keep up with the latest info at columbuscommons.org/events/food-trucks.

Parking is available at metered spots around the Commons or in the Columbus Commons garage at 55 E. Rich St.

  • The owners of Hiraeth in the Short North announced that the restaurant will close for dinner service after June 1 and transition instead to hosting pop-up dinners, guest chefs, special events, and more. Sometimes its hard to keep up with all the new restaurants in Columbus! So I’m here to highlight five eateries that have opened in the past month. Hopefully this helps you keep up with new ideas for culinary adventures around the city.

1. Los Potosinos

After many years of parking their food truck around the city, Los Potosinos has settled into its first brick and mortar storefront! They found a home on East Long Street in King-Lincoln, right next to the highway. The location is geared more towards carryout, although they’ve already built a brick patio with picnic tables outside. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy some pollo al carbon, tacos, quesadillas, even some Mexican breakfasts!

2. Standardized Brewing

Standardized Brewing debuted at the gateway to the Evans Farm development in Lewis Center. The new neighborhood features streets of picturesque houses, with a mini “downtown” at the front. Although it’s named as a brewery, Standardized opens early every day serving breakfast sandwiches, One Line Coffee, Der Dutchman donuts, and other snacks. You can transition nicely from coffee to beer, or grab dinner from one of the food trucks they host.

3. Maison Skalli

Maison Skalli is a new spot in Dublin serving beautiful pastries, coffee, and breakfasts and brunches. They draw their inspiration from both European and Northern African sources, so you’ll find a delightful range of dishes.

4. El Carajillo Mexican Cafe & Bar

The owners of the Trading & Coffee trailer, which used to appear in Worthington before migrating to German Village for regular markets and events, took over the old Woodhouse Vegan space in Italian Village, transforming it to El Carajillo. It’s open daily, all day long, serving coffee and breakfasts as well as boozy drinks and dinner.

5. Hank’s Low Country Seafood & Raw Bar

Hank’s technically joined the dining scene at the end of April, but it’s worth highlighting here. The Charleston-based seafood spot debuted in the new build at Gay and High streets downtown, offering a swanky new lounge and restaurant with, of course, a heavy feature on all things from-the-sea.

BONUS: Mecha Noodle Bar

Okay, so like Hank’s, Mecha Noodle Bar technically opened in late April, but it’s still worth noting. The northeast chain took over the former White Castle space in the heart of Short North, revamping it with tall ceilings and beautiful natural wood accents. Their creative menu spans ramen and pho, bao buns and fried rice, and more.

In preparation for its new shop at Broad and High streets downtown, Black Kahawa coffee roasters has opened up its trailer on the patio, serving coffee, snacks, and whole beans.

Black Kahawa is revamping the former Tim Horton’s on the northeast corner of this key downtown intersection. They plan to open the full shop sometime this summer.

They’ve already had a steady presence downtown, from pop-ups at the Hills Market to appearances by their trailer on the Scioto Mile last summer.

In the meantime, their trailer is serving all your coffee needs!

Their menu includes drip coffee, espresso drinks, nitro cold brew, tea, plus snacks from Bite This By Annie. You can also purchase whole bean coffee.

I’m especially partial to their nitro cold brew with their Zanzibar spice blend. It’s lightly sweet with touches of cardamom and cinnamon.

Black Kahawa features East African coffees, imported from small farmers and roasted here in Columbus.

The coffee trailer is up and running Tuesdays through Saturdays, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Look, I’m always on the hunt for donuts, so it’s fun seeing more mochi donuts pop up around town!

Mochi donuts are a blend of classic American pastries and Japanese mochi, which are confections made with a spongy and chewy rice flour. These versions are typically crafted into circles of eight tiny balls, then lightly frosted in a variety of flavors.

Here’s where to find mochi donuts in Columbus!

1. The Mochi Shop

The Mochi Shop has been a staple of the Worthington Farmers Market for a couple years. Their donuts have undergone a few different changes over the years before landing on the trendy, eight-segmented style.

Nowadays they often appear at farmers markets like Dublin and Worthington, shops like Little Cat Boba and Kitty Bubble Cafe & Bar. You can also pre-order from their website and pick up from Global Gallery Coffee Shop in Clintonville on Saturdays.

You’ll find flavors like cookies and cream, ube, strawberry cream, matcha white chocolate, passionfruit, honeydew, and more.

They sell out fairly quickly at the markets on Saturdays, so make sure you visit early!

Learn more: @the.mochi.shop on Instagram and the-mochi-shop.square.site

2. Mochi Ring

Mochi Ring is a small chain mainly centered in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, although they’re expanding eastward, including a new shop in Columbus’ Kenny Centre on the northwest side!

In addition to mochi donuts, they serve more Instagram-friendly treats like bubble tea, Korean corn dogs, and “tornado potatoes,” spiral-cut fried potatoes on a stick.

Mochi Ring’s displays are lined with trays of donuts in a variety of flavors.

You’ll find fun flavors like milk chocolate with marshmallows.

Or vanilla icing with Fruity Pebbles.

Find Mochi Ring at 1144 Kenny Centre Mall!

Learn more at mochiringohio.com or @mochiringcolumbus on Instagram.

There’s always a lot happening in the Columbus restaurant world! Here’s the latest:

  • Today at 11 a.m. Land-Grant Brewing opens its new bar, Extension. The stand-alone space is next to the Gravity Experience Park, across the alley from Land-Grant’s main taproom and beer garden. It serves experimental beers, wine, and cocktails. See more in Land-Grant Brewing Opens The Extension Bar!
  • Also today, Lucky’s Market opens its new Victorian Village store at 747 Neil Ave. It’s part of the rebuilt Thurber Village plaza, former site of a Giant Eagle (and a Big Bear, if you remember that far back). In addition to Lucky’s, the plaza includes a new apartment building and a reconstructed CVS on the corner.
  • The Toro Meat Market also opened a new store at 704 Parsons Ave. this week! This makes for three locations for the family-owned Mexican market. Two years ago Toro took over the former Carfagna’s space at 1405 E. Dublin Granville Rd. when Carfagna’s moved to Polaris.
  • I’m excited to check out this place! The Latin-inspired Cocinamos Bakery + Bistro opened recently at 3 W. Winter St. in downtown Delaware, serving coffee, baked goods, and lunch.
  • Budd Dairy Food Hall announced that Zaki Mediterranean Grill would become a permanent stall in June, taking over the former Cousins Maine Lobster space. Zaki was previously part of Budd Dairy’s Hatch incubator program.
  • Mouton cocktail bar announced this week that its official last day in business will be June 1. Back in April Mouton announced that its landlord hadn’t renewed its lease, as a new business would take over Mouton’s storefront and the one next door.
  • Agape Mediterranean announced that it will add a fifth location this fall at Grandview Yard.
  • The Pearl Market opened for the season this week! This year you’ll find it every Tuesday at Pearl and Gay streets from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and every Thursday at the Columbus Commons from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., now through October. Also kicking off this week is the Food Truck Food Court every Thursday at the Commons and Breakfast at the Commons Wednesday mornings from 7:30-10:30 a.m.
  • Chef Alana Shock of Alana’s Food & Wine hosts a pop-up dinner this Saturday, May 18 at Station in Granville.
  • In the latest round of reader’s polls, Buckeye Donuts has been nominated for USA Today’s 10Best awards for Best Donut Shop. Go vote for them daily!

  • Pam’s Market Popcorn & Windy City Eats announced that it will be closing on June 22 of this year. Owner Pam Tylka cited health concerns as the reason. Pam’s first started at North Market downtown in 2005 before moving to 955 E. Johnstown Rd. in Gahanna in 2017.
  • Over the weekend, Homestead Beer Co. closed their original taproom in Heath. They’re moving the taproom and production facility to Gahanna, where they purchased Heart State Brewing at 750 Cross Pointe Rd. They’ll be renovating the facility to become a full bar and restaurant. (Get a look at Homestead’s original taproom in our 2019 itinerary Let’s Go To Licking County.)
  • This Saturday, May 11, Bubbly Hall in New Albany welcomes its newest vendor, Crunchick. The Korean fried chicken stall takes the place of Just Chicken, which closed earlier this year.

Aardvark Wine & Beer opened in late 2022 in Linworth, converting a former carryout into a colorful and well-stocked space with an expertly curated selection of wine and beer. Since opening they’ve expanded their collection and even invited a Ray Ray’s Hog Pit food truck to park on site Thursdays-Sundays.

Well, they’ve been busy at work on the under-utilized rear portion of their building…

..and just opened it up as the Dive Baar!

The Dive Baar is a comfy and spacious area in the back serving wines by the glass, beer, cider (drawn from Seek-No-Further in Granville), and local snacks.

The joke with the name (aside from the double-A like “Aardvark”) is that the building was once used as a scuba diving school! You can still see the outline in the floor where the pool once sat.

Hanging out in the Dive Baar gives you more time to eyeball the wine selection, too!

You can also duck into the open beer cave for a refrigerated selection of craft beers.

You’ll find a good stock of Belgian beers and other specialties, too.

Congrats to Donnie and Megan on the opening of Dive Baar!

After settling into a home last year in King-Lincoln Bronzeville, Los Potosinos opened its own brick and mortar location this past weekend, just in time for Cinco de Mayo! The popular Mexican food truck, known for its pollo al carbon, first opened more than a decade ago on the West Side. They disappeared for bit before surfacing on a couple different corners in King-Lincoln and settling in to one on Long Street last summer.

Now they’ve taken over the small storefront that was formerly What The Waffle, right at the corner of East Long Street and Elijah Pierce Boulevard, next to I-71. The space features an ordering counter and a small grass lawn with tables next to it. There’s plenty of free parking on Long Street.

The new space also includes a full-size menu (previously they were handwritten on smaller signs). It details their full offerings, from tacos and quesadillas to burritos and tortas, drinks and salsas, dinner plates and daily specials.

We caught them on their opening day and ordered a few meals.

Their burritos are top-notch, filled with beans, rice, tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, sour cream, and your choice of meat. Here’s a chorizo burrito!

And here’s one with chicken.

The fish tacos are positively loaded with grilled fish and crisp veggies.

Don’t skip out on their signature dish, their pollo al carbon. This grilled chicken is served in a platter with rice, beans, salad, tortillas, and salsas. You can often smell them grilling the chicken whenever you’re close by; it’s delightfully charred but still well-seasoned and tender.

New at this location is their Mexican breakfast, a platter of eggs scrambled with peppers and onions, served with rice, beans, salsa, and tortillas.

The location is mostly carryout, but they’ve put out a collection of tables and chairs in the grass so you can enjoy your meal there. I hope Los Potosinos does well in this new location!

Owner Lidia Labra said their hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

There’s always a lot happening in the Columbus restaurant world! Here’s the latest:

  • Mikey’s Late Night Slice announced this week that it will open two new stores inside the Pins Mechanical Co. locations in Dublin and at Easton this summer, replacing the two Weenie Wonder locations that abruptly closed in February.
  • The owners of Los Agavez Taqueria teased a second location this week! Although they wouldn’t specify where, they said it will be a brick and mortar, not a second truck. Read more about Los Agavez and their amazing birria tacos!
  • Three Columbus food businesses took home Good Food awards this week! Foris Extraordinary Meats (which was formerly North Country Charcuterie), Crimson coffee, and Seek-No-Further Cidery all nabbed awards for their work.
  • Dave’s Hot Chicken opens its third central Ohio today at 803 Polaris Pkwy. in Westerville. It joins locations on West Dublin Granville Road in Dublin and on North High Street near campus.
  • Columbus City Council just approved a new DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) for downtown Columbus. After it gets final state approval, it will go live on May 24. You can read more about the Center City DORA here.
  • Farmers market season is kicking off! The Worthington Farmers Market (which was just named Best Farmers Market in the country by USA Today) opens its outdoor season this Saturday, May 4 at 8 a.m. It continues outdoors through November. Likewise, the Dublin Farmers Market in Bridge Park kicks off this Saturday; the Clintonville Farmers Market started last week.
  • A new food truck called Ember and Spice debuted this week at Land-Grant Brewing Company, serving smashburgers, tacos, grilled cheese, and more.
  • Business First verified this week that WY Mongolian Grill is now open at 8633 Columbus Pike in Lewis Center.
  • DraftKing Sports & Social, a bar and restaurant focused on sports-betting, opens at 840 N. High St. (the former Melt space) in the Short North on Thursday, May 9.
  • A new coffee shop called Coffee on High opened this week at 3 S. High St. in Canal Winchester. They feature beans from Jennings Java Coffee Roasters.
  • Central Ohio’s second location of Caribou Coffee opens at 1752 Columbus Pike in Delaware on Wednesday, May 8. Caribou pulled out of the region about a decade ago before a franchisee opened a shop in Reynoldsburg last year.
  • A new food vendor called High Eats debuted at the High Street Kitchens (2864 N. High St. in Clintonville) earlier this week. They serve a range of gyros, burgers, rice platters, wings, and more.
  • 614 Now shared that YF Chinese Cuisine at 5225 Godown Rd. on the northwest side has closed and been replaced by Kung Fu Noodle.
  • With the arrival of May, Columbus Food Adventures’ outdoor tours return, including the taco truck tour and Worthington tour. This month, CFA is also hosting a Taste of Somalia dinner with Hoyo’s Kitchen at Bubbly Food Hall on May 15 and a Park House Supper Club dinner with chef Silas Caeton on May 8.

1. El Camino Inn

After going on hiatus in March 2020, El Camino Inn returned late last year. The cozy, laidback lounge was updated with eclectic seating and decor, but the tacos, tostadas, tortas, burritos, and cocktails are as good as ever. It’s one of our favorite inexpensive date night spots!

2. Los Potosinos

Okay, so I featured Los Potosinos’ truck last July when they reopened after a long hiatus. But now they’re taking the extra step and opening their own brick and mortar this month! They’ve moved into the former What The Waffle storefront on East Long Street next to Interstate 71. You can still catch their truck, but very soon they’ll have a stable spot to enjoy their signature pollo al carbon.

3. Crazzy Greek

There’s no shortage of easy-to-love, casual Greek places across Columbus, from Greek Express and their amazing fries to hidden spots like Yappy Greek. Crazzy Greek is another one of those, tucked into a small strip mall technically in Westerville but just south of Polaris Parkway. They offer up terrific hummus, spicy feta fries, gyros, and spanakopita.

4. The Locust Table

The Locust Table is a delightful cafe in Powell with a brightly lit dining room and patio space. They offer Stauf’s coffee, scones and cookies, breakfast burritos, huevos rancheros, breakfast sandwiches, French toast, and other morning favorites.

5. Little Ladies Soft Serve

With warmer weather arriving, it’s time to really start thinking about ice cream! And our favorite is Little Ladies Soft Serve. We fell in love with them a few years ago when their truck visited nearby neighborhoods, but nowadays we visit their Westerville shop. Their soft serve is the best we’ve ever tasted, but their sundaes really seal the deal. My first love was the Aggie with crushed puppy chow, mini buckeyes, peanut butter sauce, and hot fudge.

There’s always a lot happening in the Columbus restaurant world! Here’s the latest:

  • Last week the owners of Mouton cocktail bar in the Short North said they’ll be closing in the coming weeks, saying their lease was not renewed. The landlord is offering the space and the adjoining storefront for development. Mouton first opened in 2010; an exact closing date will be announced soon.
  • The big news out of the North Market Downtown is that Littleton’s Market, which opened last December in Upper Arlington, will take over the former Omega Artisan Baking stall on the southwest corner. Dubbed Littleton’s Market Bakery, it will feature a retail bakery and cafe as well as production space, and will be run by pastry chef Aaron Clouse (check out his work from his time at Parable Coffee). It’s set to open sometime this summer.
  • In other market news, the forthcoming market hall coming to the Grandview Crossing development got a few updates this week. We learned it will be called the Little Grand Market, and will include 12 stalls, a bar called the Little Grand Bar, and a new location of Thrive Companies’ (which is developing the project) coffee shop/cocktail bar concept Bada Bean Bada Booze. It’s all slated to open this summer.
  • This Saturday, April 27, a new bakery and brunch spot called Maison Skalli is soft opening at 2746 Festival Lane in Dublin.
  • In case you missed it this week, North Country Charcuterie announced that it has a new name, Foris Extraordinary Meats. The owners said the name change came about as they celebrate 10 years in business, continue growing, and add more products beyond charcuterie.
  • On the heels of Three Bites Bakery‘s announcement that it’s moving downtown, Yawning Bear Bread Co. shared that it will take over Three Bite’s current space at 999 Mt. Vernon Ave. in King-Lincoln.
  • Jalisco Mexican Ice Cream opened recently at 5300 Westpointe Plaza Dr. in Hilliard.
  • Blue Agave Mexican restaurant recently opened a new location at 96 Granville St. in Gahanna.
  • It seems official now that the Buca di Beppo at 60 E. Wilson Bridge Rd. in Worthington will close, as its property was sold to Chick-Fil-A.
  • Columbus Food Adventures announced the addition of a new tour: an Italian Village pizza tour! It kicks off May 4 and will run twice monthly through the end of July.
  • Next week Tuesday, April 30, Hiraeth is hosting a one-night-only dinner with chef Boby Pradachith.
  • Starting Monday, April 29, Swenson’s Drive-In is celebrating its 90th birthday with some fun specials. Through June 16 you can try the Birthday Boy Burger, a triple-layered version of their signature Galley Boy. Then from June 17-August 11 you can taste their Birthday Cake Milkshake.
  • This Saturday, April 27, the Hills Market in Worthington brings back their popular $5 pancake breakfast. It’s offered every Saturday (8 a.m. to noon) and Sunday (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.), May-October, on their patio.

There’s always a lot happening in the Columbus restaurant world! Here’s the latest:

  • Next week Tuesday, April 23, Hank’s Low Country Seafood & Raw Bar opens at 6 W. Gay St. downtown. This is the second location of the Charleston-based seafood restaurant. It’s operated by Makeready, which runs The Junto and the forthcoming Chouette French bistro coming across High Street from Hank’s.
  • Campus gained a couple new casual eateries lately! The fast casual Indian spot Rollz Rice, which started in Lewis Center, opened a location at 16 E. Sixteenth Ave. last week. They let you customize bowls, wraps, and naan breads.
  • And just this week a noodle spot called I Love Noods opened at 9 E. Lane Ave. The small chain features ramen, pho, dumplings, dim sum, boba tea, and other dishes. Their official grand opening is Friday, April 26 – all bowls will be $1 that day.
  • The Crispy Coop opened a second location yesterday at 6330 Tussing Rd. Reynoldsburg. Their first location is in Grandview/5xNW. (And apparently they had a Pickerington location for a couple years that recently closed.)
  • The Granville Inn unveiled a new look this past week, with big renovations to some of its dining rooms and patios, as well as an upgraded menu.
  • You have this Sunday and next (April 21 and 28) to catch the collaboration between Hot Chicken Takeover and Dough Mama. All HCT locations are serving a limited amount of sandwiches on Dough Mama biscuits; they open early at 10:30 a.m. those days. Dough Mama is also serving a chicken salad biscuit sandwich with HCT ranch and pickles.
  • Get your tickets now for Koso’s Ramen After Dark pop-up at the East Market on Friday, April 26 from 7-9 p.m. They’ll be serving specialty bowls of Korean ramen that night!
  • This week Law Bird kicked off a new pop-up called Sakura City Pop, featuring Japanese Suntory whiskeys. It’s running through April 28; reservations can be made through their website.
  • Last week Watershed Distillery released the second batch of its rare uncut, unfiltered bourbon. It’s available at select OHLQ shops around the state.
  • This Saturday, April 20, Rose Dough Donuts is hosting a Best in Show fundraiser benefitting Stop the Suffering Ohio, including special donuts, a dog parade, coffee, and beer at Olentangy River Brewing Company. You can sign up your pup to participate here!

The breakfast burrito might just be the perfect food. It takes all the great things about breakfast – eggs, meat, cheese, veggies – and rolls them into the ideal delivery system. It’s making me hungry just to write about them, so here are 11 of the best breakfast burritos in Columbus!

1. Mordisco

Address: 303 Green Meadows Dr. S., Lewis Center (at Olentangy River Brewing)

Mordisco moves around central Ohio a bit, but they’re most consistently found at Olentangy River Brewing Company, Tuesdays to Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.. On their winning menu of arepas, bowls, and empanadas you’ll find an excellently composed breakfast burrito. It’s loaded with bacon, scrambled eggs, tater tots, American cheese, and avocado, then served with their cilantro and spicy sauces on the side.

Read more: Mordisco

2. Emmett’s Cafe

Address: 744 S. High St., German Village and 2571 Neil Ave., Old North

Emmett’s serves up a lot of delicious breakfasts, but their breakfast burrito might be my favorite thing on the menu. They wrap a flour tortilla around scrambled eggs, avocado, monterey jack cheese, prosciutto, crispy tater tots, with a chipotle aioli and side of salsa.

Read more: Emmett’s Cafe on South High and Emmett’s in Old North

Image courtesy Tula Taqueria on Facebook

3. Tula Taqueria

Address: 525 Lazelle Rd., Westerville/Polaris

Tula Taqueria is a family-runs spot on Lazelle Road, just south of Polaris Parkway. You can’t go wrong with their tacos, tortas, taquitos, and platters (I’m especially partial to their chorizo and adobada), and they incorporate some breakfast items, too. Their breakfast burrito incorporates your choice of meat (I suggest the chorizo) with eggs, cheese, potatoes, cilantro, and sour cream in a flour tortilla.

Read more: Tula Taqueria

Image courtesy DK Diner on Facebook

4. DK Diner

Address: 1715 W. Third Ave., Grandview

DK Diner does many things well, from their hearty breakfasts to some of the city’s best donuts (that sour cream old fashioned, mmmmm). Their monster breakfast burrito is loaded with three scrambled eggs, two types of cheese, hash browns, sausage, onion, pepper, and salsa.

Read more: What’s Better at DK Diner: The Breakfast or the Donuts?

5. Freedom a la Cart

Address: 123 E. Spring St., Downtown

At Freedom a la Cart, you can get delicious breakfasts that support an amazing cause: providing employment and resources to survivors of human trafficking. My favorite item on their small but mighty menu is the breakfast burrito. It’s a flavorful and beautifully composed package of eggs, chorizo, hash browns, and provolone with roasted peppers and onions, served with a rich tomatillo salsa on the side.

Read more: Great Breakfast for an Even Better Cause at Freedom a la Cart

6. High Bank Distillery

Address: 1051 Goodale Blvd., Grandview and 1379 E. Johnstown Rd., Gahanna

On top of its award-winning spirits, High Bank serves a creative brunch with dishes like breakfast corn dogs, nachos, chicken and biscuits, and the Brunch Wrap Supreme. Their breakfast burrito is top-notch, filled with brisket barbacoa, scrambled eggs, cheddar, hash browns, black beans, pico de gallo, a roasted tomato salsa, and sour cream.

Read more: High Bank Distillery

7. HangOverEasy

Address: 1646 Neil Ave., Campus and 51 Parsons Ave., Olde Towne East

HangOverEasy is known for their filling and sometimes over-the-top breakfasts. They started simply on Neil Avenue, but added a Parsons location and then expanded beyond Columbus in recent years. Not to be missed is The Dirty, their giant breakfast burrito packed with scrambled eggs, a house-made chorizo, home fries (dubbed “Hoe Fries”), and queso, all wrapped in a flour tortilla and served with cheddar, pico, and crema.

Read more: Hang Over Easy on Neil Avenue

8. South of Lane

Address: 1987 Guilford Rd., Upper Arlington

South of Lane is such a delightful little gem in Upper Arlington, a cozy spot with a sense of humor and creative breakfasts to match. Their Brickhouse Burrito features a house-made SOL omelet (peppers/onion/pepperjack/pico de gallo) with hash browns, chili, cheddar, more pepperjack, and sides of avocado, sour cream, and pico.

Read more: South of Lane

9. Cuco’s Taqueria

Address: 2162 W. Henderson Rd., Northwest

It often surprises folks that Cuco’s serves breakfast! It’s been a popular spot for lunch and dinner for many years, but you can start your day early with them. Amongst the menu of huevos rancheros, machaca, moyetes, and chilaquiles, you’ll find an expertly prepared breakfast burrito with eggs, potatoes, cheese, and chorizo, served with pico, sour cream, and more potatoes on the side.

Read more: Cuco’s Taqueria

10. Heirloom Cafe

Address: 1871 N. High St., Campus (inside the Wexner Center)

Heirloom Cafe is a hidden gem on the lower floor of the Wexner Center, serving a vegetarian- and vegan-forward menu (although there’s meat involved, too!). Their signature Eye Opener burrito is a zesty mix of scrambled eggs, herbed potatoes, chorizo, sharp white cheddar, and Frank’s Red Hot in a whole wheat wrap with a little side of salsa. There’s a vegan version, too!

Read more: Heirloom Cafe

11. Jack & Benny’s

Address: 2563 N. High St., Old North

Ah, Jack & Benny’s. The classic campus diner that’s been serving hungry students for more than 30 years. Their menu is filled with hearty favorites like the chorizo scrambles, buckeye pancakes, and my personal favorite, the all-inclusive Gutbuster. Their chorizo breakfast burrito is loaded with eggs, chorizo, tomato, onion, green pepper, beans, then topped with, sour cream, avocado, and salsa.

After more than two decades without a home, Columbus’ L. Hoster Brewing Company has its own brewery and taproom once again. This week they’re celebrating the grand opening of their space at 653 N. James Rd. on the east side near the airport. The space was formerly home to Actual Brewing, which shuttered in 2019.

Hoster Brewing is a long-time Columbus name, originally started by Louis Hoster in 1836 in the Brewery District, where some of his buildings remain. The brewery and its recipes have changed hands a number of times over the years, with the latest owner, Daniel Meyers, settling into this space.

Hoster has given the place a handsome makeover, so what was once a series of dark rooms is now a bright, colorful, and delightfully old school bar, with booths, tables, a jukebox, and loads of vintage decor.

Regulars can now belly up to the bar, where 10+ Hoster beers are on tap, from German lagers to Belgian ales and more.

Hoster’s signature beer is their Gold Top Dortmunder lager, and it sits proudly at the top of the menu.

The Gold Top is a great example of what Hoster does best: clean, flavorful, easy-drinking beers.

In addition to the Gold Top, I sampled their Eagle Dark Czech lager – and collected my first stamp on the new Columbus Ale Trail!

Already on opening night, the place was buzzing with activity.

In one corner is a shelf full of Hoster swag. And all around the space are historic photographs, old advertisements, and bottles from Hoster’s nearly 200-year history.

You can even peek through the glass doors to see the brewery itself.

Hoster’s opening weekend celebrations continue Friday, April 12 from 4-10 p.m. and Saturday, April 13 from noon to 10 p.m., before they start regular hours.

This week Connecticut-based Mecha Noodle Bar debuted its first Ohio location in the Short North at 965 N. High St., in the former White Castle space, and they kindly invited us to try it out!

The space has been beautifully redone to incorporate a long bar and a comfortable, brightly lit dining room with natural wood accents. Throughout the space, wooden architectural details hang down from the ceiling.

Mecha’s menu covers a range of bao buns, small plates, sushi, pho, and ramen.

It’s all supplemented by bubble tea, cocktails, wine, sake, and beer.

We tried a trio of drinks: the limeade, Thai iced tea, and Vietnamese iced coffee. All delicious.

Our servers were very enthusiastic, and heartily recommended a few munchies to try. All of them praised the dumplings, especially these roasted mushroom dumplings with butter miso and arugula. They weren’t wrong.

The menu leads off with a quartet of bao buns. It was a little confusing how many came in an order, but we managed to order a trio of buns in two different flavors.

The pork belly came with giant slices of the belly, almost too big to comfortably eat in a bao bun. Our server said these were small, two-bite buns, but clearly they’re much larger.

Same with the Korean fried chicken buns; the thin slices of fried chicken are generously portioned. You could easily make an entire meal out of these.

Our server recommended the kimchi fried rice as well. Again, the portions were overly generous. The rice is very nicely seasoned, and just like the bao buns, it could go as a full meal.

Then on to the main event: noodle bowls!

First up, a bowl of pho. The Pho Sizzle features grilled flank steak. We really enjoyed it; the pho broth is richly seasoned.

Same with the tonkotsu ramen. It’s loaded with flavor, especially from the tender slices of pork belly.

As a bonus, our server let us try the Pho Bo, a flavor-packed pho with rare steak and bone marrow you scoop into the broth.

We enjoyed Mecha. The food arrived in huge portions, with lots of great flavors, and service was very attentive. I hope it becomes a fixture of the Short North.

There’s always a lot happening in the Columbus restaurant world! Here’s the latest:

  • Last week, Three Bites Bakery announced that it will be moving to 12 E. Broad St. downtown (the former site of Jack & Benny’s) later this year as part of the Ground Floor Growth Program, which encourages women- and minority-owned businesses. This includes Three Bites, which is joining forces with Little Cat Boba, as well as Black Kahawa Coffee, which is opening a coffee patio nearby.

  • After a long hiatus, Hoster Brewing makes its return to the Columbus brewing scene with the soft open of its new taproom at 653 N. James Rd. (where Actual Brewing once sat). Hoster originally started in the 1830s in the Brewery District, as one of the city’s first big breweries. Get a look at Hoster’s new taproom here.
  • Kokomo Juice & Coffee Paradise soft opened this week at 694 Parsons Ave. in a new build.
