Piazza Pelino Brings Fresh Focaccia and Gelato to Short North

December 6, 2023

Last week the owners of Pelino’s Pasta debuted a new sandwich and gelato shop in the Short North called Piazza Pelino. It takes over the former Piece of Cake space facing Warren Street, next to The Lox Bagel Shop and across from the Graduate Hotel.

The shop debuted just in time for Holiday Hop on Saturday, which drew in huge crowds and closed down High Street for the first time.

The space has been given a bright makeover, with new wooden floors, blue walls, and colorful umbrellas hanging over the retail shop.

As you enter the doors, on the right side is the kitchen and ordering counter, while on the left is the retail space.

Their menu currently features six sandwiches, gelato, and water.

It’s fun watching them slice up fresh focaccia for sandwiches.

Signs on the wall explain their ingredients and culinary practices. You’ll see items imported from Italy, plus local favorites like Snowville Creamery.

We ordered two sandwiches: the Della Casa (top) and the Tricolore (bottom). Both sandwiches were nicely constructed and with great quality ingredients. The ratio leans a little more toward bread versus fillings, and for both sandwiches we wanted a little more something – maybe a little crisp or a little salt.

Piazza Pelino also dishes up homemade gelato.

You can order the gelato at the counter, the same time you’re ordering sandwiches, then pick it up when you’re ready.

Piazza Pelino is currently open Wednesdays through Sundays, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
