While on an overnight stay at a treehouse in Amish County, we started off our time with a hearty lunch at Boyd & Wurthmann in Berlin, Ohio, which has been serving classic Amish-style home-cooking since 1938. It started first as a grocery store before becoming a full-service restaurant in the 1950s, and now the small, cash-only spot serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner six days a week – a perfect introduction to the region!
Boyd & Wurthmann features a small waiting area in the front; a host will check on groups and usher people inside to open tables or counter seats. The space seems to have remained relatively unchanged over the years, and has the markings of a classic American diner: drop ceilings, wood paneling, sturdy booths, display cases loaded with pies.
We stopped in for lunch for some stick-to-your-ribs fare. I gravitated toward their specials like the hot roast beef sandwich: an overloaded sandwich with tender roast beef and a generous scoop of mashed potatoes, all covered with gravy.
Or how about their signature noodles over mashed potatoes? It’s a bowl of mashed potatoes covered by noodles in gravy.
Boyd & Wurthmann makes a solid fried chicken as well… with the requisite side of mashed potatoes (I’m sensing a theme here).
The lunch and dinner menu also includes burgers and sandwiches; Trail bologna; dinner plates with chicken, roast beef, country fried steak, fried ham; liver and onions; and more.
But DO NOT LEAVE without getting a slice of pie. The regulars will tell you that, the servers will remind you. Check out the day’s offerings on the wall, then order away.
We tasted a couple slices, like this coconut cream pie. Their slices are giant, with sturdy custard and generous toppings. They’re sweet but not over the top.
Same with the lemon meringue pie. Simply luscious!
Our server suggested the ho ho cake as well. It’s a chocolate cake that doesn’t have any right being this good, topped with vanilla soft serve. I would order one of these desserts even after breakfast.
I mean, what else can we say about the place? I would absolutely make it a stop if you’re exploring Ohio’s Amish country. It’s smack dab in the middle of downtown Berlin, so you can walk around to the shops and other restaurants, too!
Boyd & Wurthmann is open Monday-Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday-Saturday, 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Breakfast is served until 10:30 a.m.
