I have a long-standing love for the diner, especially how each one becomes a little community hub for their neighborhood, with regulars standing as loyal fans and advocates. So I’ll take any opportunity to explore a new one, and last month’s assignment for the Dispatch found me at the border of Bexley and Eastmoor at Stav’s Diner (read the review here.)

And, boy, am I glad it led us here. Stav’s is less than two years old, but it feels more well established. The diner space, in a small plaza along East Broad Street, was once home to Frank’s. After it closed down, Stavros Andronis – who comes from the family owning Golden Donuts & Diner – took over the digs.

The space has all the makings of a classic diner. Tile floors, counter seats with a view of the grill, hot coffee in ceramic mugs, a simple menu of breakfast favorites.

You’ll find all the standards represented: pancakes, omelets, French toast, corned beef hash, breakfast sandwiches, biscuits and gravy.

Here’s the Western omelet. The omelets are well executed, with generous fillings. They come with a side of potatoes and toast.

I ordered the straight-up plate of eggs, potatoes, and toast, and swapped out the side of meat for corned beef hash (which is made in-house). The fried eggs were on point, as were the potatoes and hash. Our server bragged a bit on the potatoes, saying they were a mix of home fries and hash browns. They definitely leaned more toward hash browns, but that’s my preference anyway.

The corned beef hash was nice and crispy from getting pressed down on the grill, and both that and the potatoes were very well seasoned. Props to the challah French toast, too. It’s simple but nicely done, dusted with powdered sugar.

I felt very much in my element.

It makes me happy to see places like Stav’s opening up. They’re important to the fabric of the city and of the individual neighborhoods. Plus, you can’t turn down a solid breakfast like that.

And if you’re lucky Stav himself will be cooking your breakfast. I always welcome to the chance to engage directly with our food-makers.

Shout-out to my breakfast wingman (aka my brother-in-law) Chip!
