We’re always fans of a good English pub, and they’re often hard to find Stateside, so it’s always rewarding to encounter one. Over the past couple years, a couple friends have told us about The Last Queen in Enon, Ohio, so for my birthday we drove out for brunch!
Enon is a small village just off I-70, about an hour west of Columbus and close to Springfield, Dayton, and Yellow Springs.
The Last Queen opened a couple years ago, and while it’s newer, it manages to capture the feel of a neighborhood pub. The seats were lined with regulars watching Premier League soccer.
Guests are welcomed in to find a seat and then order at the bar. You settle up the bill at the very end.
The Last Queen features a gastropub menu for lunch and dinner, plus a full bar with beer, wine, and cocktails, but we were there for the main event: weekend brunch! They serve brunch Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30-11:30 a.m.
And of course, I was there for the English breakfast. I’ve been jonesing hard for them especially since our trip to London last year, where we had breakfasts like the Regency Cafe.
We started with a couple beverages. They make a solid Bloody Mary.
As well as pot of English breakfast tea.
The Last Queen actually serves a full afternoon tea one Sunday a month! You can make a reservation through their website.
Out of our group of four, three of us ordered the English breakfast. You can tell I’m pretty pleased.
The Last Queen does justice to the signature dish, even with some modifications. It features two fried eggs, bacon, a pair of locally made sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes, beans, and toast. As you can imagine, it’s very filling. And while the sausages don’t have that signature crispy snap of English sausages, they’re still quite good.
Their breakfast pancakes are pretty delightful, too. It’s a pair of towering pancakes topped with bacon, sausage, and an egg. Beautiful presentation.
The pub also features a couple garage doors that open onto a patio.
I think the pub is well worth the road trip from Columbus! And if you’re not in the mood for breakfast, they serve a full range of English classics like bangers and mash, fish and chips, shepherd’s pie. The Last Queen would also make a great starting point for exploring the nearby cities, hiking Aullwood Audubon Center, or visiting the Air Force Museum.
