A new donut place opening is exciting to everyone, right? It’s not just me? It’s kinda rare that a full brick-and-mortar donut shop opens up around town (although we do see more pop-ups). We had heard that Amy’s Donuts, which is originally based in Colorado Springs, was opening soon, but then suddenly last Monday – there it was!

Amy’s fills a void for good donuts on the west side of town; it’s on Georgesville Road a little ways south of Broad Street, in the vicinity of the casino (and some great taco trucks). The color scheme is on the same eye-catching spectrum as other national donut chains.

Before arriving, I had no clue how many types of donuts Amy’s produces.

IMG_8291

They fry up a single yeast-raised base, then top it with almost everything imaginable: crushed up candy, brightly colored glazes, fruit, nuts and sprinkles, you name it.

Fortunately, the base donut isn’t overly sweet, so while there’s not a lot of nuance when it comes to Amy’s flavors, they’re not the complete teeth-rattling sugarbombs they could be.

Our boys were quickly worked into a frenzy by all the possibilities, and we collected a half dozen to go. I mean, you can’t blame them. Faced with donuts covered in crushed up Oreos or Twix or gummy rainbows, how can you keep still?

Amy’s is playing to their market by introducing a buckeye donut with chocolate, vanilla, and cherry frosting.

We visited at 5 p.m. and still they were rolling out more donuts. They open early (5 a.m.) and close in the evenings, although because they’re relatively new they’ve been selling out a bit. Maybe keep an eye on their Facebook page if you’re going later in the day.

Half the fun, though, is just perusing all the different types.

You name the flavor, and I’m sure they have it. I expect they’ll work in some seasonal specials, too.

The crew was busy but they worked quickly. Although there was a line you won’t have to wait long.

We picked a bit of everything. Starting in the bottom right corner and going clockwise: Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, the buckeye donut, one with Biscoff, the Somewhere Over the Rainbow, cotton candy, and a fudge donut with gummy worms.

Thumbs up from our crew. The donuts were certainly on the sugary side, but it’s worth the trip to have a little fun and pick out a box. We burned off the calories by hiking through the new Scioto Grove Metro Park (only about 10 minutes) away!
