Alebrijes Food Truck Adds Breakfast

April 19, 2023

The Alebrijes food truck, a fixture in the King-Lincoln Bronzeville district for over three years now, started opening early for breakfast hours this week! The truck sits at the northeast corner of East Long Street and Taylor, behind East High School, catty corner from the MLK Library, and across from OSU Hospital East. Just follow your nose to the welcoming smells of the charcoal grill!

Alebrijes draws its name for carved or painted imaginary figures, which decorate the outside of the truck. They’re currently serving breakfast Monday to Friday from 7:30-10:30 a.m. (different than the printed menu). Their offerings include a breakfast sandwich with either sausage, spam, or tomato, a pair of tacos, coffee, and donuts (which they said they’re still tweaking, so they aren’t fully available yet).

Alebrijes also serves its regular menu of tacos, tortas, burritos, quesadillas, and its signature grilled chicken.

I’ve made a couple visits this week to try most of the menu. (Twist my arm.)

First up, the tacos: they offer a huevos con chorizo, with the eggs scrambled and mixed with a lovely chorizo, and a fried egg taco with an egg, onions, and cilantro. I added slices of avocado to both of them.

The breakfast sandwich really stands out for me: a house-made English muffin layered with fried egg, cheese, a zesty sausage, and a Calabrian chili mayo.

It’s compact, well-seasoned, and filling.

Even though they’re just testing out breakfast (and I can’t wait to try those donuts), I’d say the Alebrijes team is off to a great start.

If you visit later for lunch or dinner, make a point to try the grilled chicken. When Alebrijes first opened, it took the spot of long-time taco truck Los Potosinos, which was known for its pollo al carbon. (Side note: Los Potosinos recently surfaced again on the west side.)
