On assignment for the Columbus Dispatch a couple weeks ago, I found myself exploring 101 Beer Kitchen with the boys. You can read my review here. I just wanted to share some of our photos!
101 Beer Kitchen is one of many restaurants that’s best described as a modern beer-centric eatery. I automatically compare it to places like Pies & Pints. Places like this have creative food, a solid beer list, and a space big enough to host sizable groups. In my mind, 101 Beer Kitchen is leading the pack.
First, they’ve got a very good beer selection. It rotates often enough you can always find something interesting. I snagged some Dark Horse Plead the 5th imperial stout. When I ordered, the server commented that he hadn’t tried it yet, so when he brought me the beer, he brought himself a tiny sample and toasted me.
Second, the brunch menu takes things to crazy and colorful levels. Breakfast pizzas, pan-fried oatmeal, pork belly benedicts.
The brunch starters are fun, too: strawberry pop tarts, loaded tater tots, praline biscuits, pretzels, wings… and pigs in a blanket. They’re soft and rich, and come with a great honey mustard sauce.
One of the big brunch features – the one everyone said “You have to get this!” when I said I was headed to 101 – is the 101 Twinkie. Technically, this is their French toast offering. But the name is truthful: it’s a giant, homemade Twinkie. Covered bacon and berry sauce.
As far as French toast goes, this was excellent. It’s a large, custardy-soft slice, the berry sauce isn’t overpowering, and it oozes with a sweet vanilla pastry cream. French toast lovers, add this to your list.
Third, 101 really exemplifies the trend of great kid’s menus. It’s fairly creative, it’s interactive, it’s nicely presented, and there are healthy options. They actually fill out their own menu, which gets them involved in the process right away.
One of our boys chose cheesy scrambled eggs, toast, and bacon.
Another did French toast dippers, bacon, and homemade applesauce.
I’m always on the lookout for a good benedict, so the pork belly benedict was my choice.
The whole meal is rich and colorful. I love the bed of black-eyed peas, fried green tomatoes, and arugula. The pork belly is hard to see, but it’s in there. The poached eggs were done well, and the hollandaise gets a nice Sriracha kick.
I think one of my favorite things about brunch at 101 Beer Kitchen is that it reminded of two things:
1.) Brunch is meant to be fun.
2.) Sometimes it just tastes so dang good.
Two reasons why I love writing about it (and eating it)!
This meal was covered by the Dispatch as part of a review. Photos and opinions here are my own.
