A Ode to Cravings Cafe’s Sandwiches

November 11, 2021

Our love of Cravings Cafe downtown is pretty well documented. We’ve been following Matt and Lindsey’s cafe since its days as a bakery and crepe shop in Italian Village called Cookie Cravings Bakery, then through a name change to Cravings Carryout Cafe, and eventually a shortening to Cravings Cafe and a move downtown onto Front Street.

I’m fortunate that my day job has me working downtown three days a week, and that I’m within easy walking distance of Cravings. It’s my favorite spot for breakfast or lunch downtown, so over the past couple years I’ve been able to try their specials and their regular menu as it shifts and changes.

So I can pretty safely say that you can’t go wrong with Cravings. Their menu usually focuses around eight sandwiches, plus salads, sides, drinks like coffee from Thunderkiss, and a collection of house baked goods.

You’re pretty much always going to find the classic breakfast roll on their brioche roll, and the downtown smashburger. Both easy hits.

There’s also some form of a grilled cheese sandwich on the menu, usually with a mix of cheeses, sometimes slices of ham or bacon. Always filling, and great with a soup.

One of my favorite specials, which usually surfaces in the late winter/early spring, is their fried fish sandwich. It’s just so perfectly fried, a delicate piece of fish with a lovely crunch, topped with greens, red onion, pickles, and a house-made Old Bay tartar sauce on their brioche bun.

Their specials range all over, from chicken cutlet sandwiches to fried chicken, Cubans to the occasional reuben, club sandwiches, tuna melts, and everything in-between.

In case it’s not clear: I’m suggesting you get lunch at Cravings sometime, especially if you’ve never been.

And don’t pass up the opportunity for a cookie, too…
