The team from Wario’s Beef & Pork, that sandwich-slinging darling that opened in the Arena District in late 2020, has opened their second location in Clintonville!
The new Wario’s Clintonville takes its place in the plaza that’s already filled with Columbus culinary heavy-hitters: Jeni’s, Hot Chicken Takeover, Northstar Cafe, Kirin Noodle Bar, Gallo’s.
The long, narrow space was previously home to The Pit BBQ Grille. It features an ordering counter at the back, a center table with stools, and two rows of booths. I love the old school look to it all: wood-paneled walls, block glass accents, hard-backed booth seats, branded Coke napkin holders.
Heading up the culinary team at Wario’s are chefs Stephan Madias and Tyler Minnis. The duo are also part of Goood Friends sandwich joint inside Jackie O’s downtown (P.S. where they just started serving brunch!).
Most of the usual suspects are back, minus the chicken cutlet but with the addition of the Chicken a la Vodka and the Chicken Caesar.
Back are the spuds, too, plus – believe it or not – a caesar salad and a pasta salad – and a dessert!
The center menu highlights the schedule of specials throughout the week.
We ordered up the spuds, which are smashed down and crispy and fragrant with parmesan and herbs.
They come with the Wario’s sauce, which has a caramelized onion base.
On the original menu, the Cold Cut is one of my favorites. It’s generously layered with meats and cheeses, plus loads of crispy shaved onion, iceberg, and house giardiniera.
New to the menu is the Chicken a la Vodka, layering in crispy chicken with a house vodka sauce, pesto, burrata, crispy pepperonis, and parmesan.
All of the sandwiches are served on semolina sticks made in Columbus by Matija Breads.
There’s a pickup shelf for anyone ordering online or over-the-phone.
Wario’s Clintonville is open Wednesday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
