A Treehouse Stay at The Mohicans

April 2, 2020

Back at the beginning of February, the folks from The Mohicans in Glenmont, Ohio, invited us to stay at one of their new treehouse cabins. We didn’t know much about the treehouses, except that they were located deep in Mohican State Park, but we were excited to stay in one!

I documented the experience partially on Ohio. Find It Here.’s blog. Read it here! But I wanted to share more of our photos from the trip.

Quick tips if you’re coming from the Columbus area:

The Mohicans is primarily an event venue, hosting weddings and other shindigs at the Grand Barn Event Center.

But spread throughout the property is a collection of tiny cabins and treehouses. Some wedding parties, they said, will rent everything out for their guests.

They generously put us up in El Castillo, one of their new treehouses. The two-story structure is anchored to and built around a small grove of trees.

You access it by climbing the stairs and crossing the short bridge to the main building. So even as you arrive you’re beginning the adventure living in the trees.

The main floor is your combined kitchen, living room, and second bedroom. (A Murphy bed folds down out of the wall.) A small bathroom, complete with a stone-lined shower, is accessible from this level.

There’s a small kitchenette with fridge, sink, microwave, induction burners, and tableware.

You can climb the narrow, twisting wooden staircase to the second floor/main bedroom. The room is mostly taken up with a king size bed, a small bench, and a giant chandelier.

There’s plenty of natural light thanks to tall windows. Both floors have small balconies, too. We played games, read books, and enjoyed a break from wifi.

For dinner, we were treated to a tasting with Chef Drew Slane in the kitchen of the Event Center.

He shared a handful of his greatest hits, from sweet and spicy wings…

…to pasta, pork chops, and roast beef. It’s amazing to see what he accomplishes, including catering full weddings at the venue, out of their kitchen. He works so efficiently in that space.

After dinner we built a fire in the firepit outside the treehouse. The snow was falling down thick through the trees, so we huddled up around the flames.

We brought our own s’mores kits and a bit of firewood from home.

The next morning dawned bright and clear, with blue skies and a thin crust of snow on the ground.

We spent the morning playing more games and relaxing.

We brought iced coffee from home and the ingredients to make avocado toast (fancy!).

Being deep in the woods is a great place to finish a couple books. I finished up Mary Oliver’s Devotions, while Owen and I worked on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

We basked in the solitude of the woods for a while. But because it was February, I decided to forego the outdoor shower.

Fortunately, our route back home took us along some of Ohio’s Scenic Byways. We paid visits to Copia Farm in Johnstown and Fox in the Snow Cafe in New Albany, too!

Thanks to the team at The Mohicans for inviting us! We’re looking forward to our next stay there.
