Here’s the deal: my birthday is this weekend, and whenever it gets close to my birthday, I feel entitled. So for this week’s Three To Try I wanted to talk about three of my favorite breakfast dishes around Columbus. Never tried them? Then consider it your birthday gift to me to go and eat them this weekend!
1. Akoori at The Table – Akoori is an Indian dish of eggs scrambled with onion, tomato, garlic, chilies, cilantro, and spices. The eggs are nice and creamy, the spices provide such a perfect zing. Sang – one of the owners of the Table – says that every culture has its own version of eggs and toast, and I’m glad she brought hers to Columbus.
2. Chorizo, egg, and jalapeno kolache at Kolache Republic – The breakfast kolaches at Kolache Republic are that perfect example of ‘simplest is best.’ They use the slightly sweetened kolache dough (a kolache is an Eastern European pastry – theirs is Czech-style) and wrap it around eggs, cheese, hash browns, bacon, sausage, etc. They do a couple types of breakfast sandwiches during the week, but offer more variety on Saturdays. My favorite version features chorizo, egg, and jalapeno. It’s a simple little package of breakfast goodness.
3. Chilaquiles at Starliner Diner – My go-to joke about Starliner’s chilaquiles is that if they offered a bottomless version of this dish, I would eat it until I passed out. It’s everything I want in a breakfast: eggs, lots of veggies, black beans, cheese, chips, and chorizo (always add the chorizo). It’s rich, hot, and a sports a nice kick.
The takeaway: I like a little spice with my breakfast.
