10 Local Restaurants to Try Right Now

April 1, 2020

I know it’s hard to keep up with what restaurants are open, who’s adapted their offerings, who’s closed temporarily.

You can follow my post – updated daily – on how to support local food-makers, including restaurants/bakeries/coffee shops that are open, breweries with carryout, meals for food-insecure kids.

Need some help getting started? I wanted to suggest 10 Columbus restaurants to try right now!

Bonifacio: get your fix of comforting Filipino fare at this 5xNW restaurant. Load up on lumpia, adobo ribs, fried chicken, grilled pork belly. Order online for takeout or delivery!

Brown Bag Deli: Brown Bag in German Village has still been producing their signature sandwiches, sides, and sweets. You can order online or by phone: (614) 443-4214.

Cravings Cafe: Matt and Lindsey Tewanger whip up some amazing sandwiches, burritos, burgers, cinnamon rolls. They’ve also been offering a daily “general store” with eggs, coffee, bread, etc. Keep an eye on their social media for the day’s offerings.

Huong Vietnamese: this family-run Vietnamese spot, often considered one of the city’s best, recently re-opened and is serving pho, spring rolls, banh mi sandwiches, and more for carryout and delivery

Hoyo’s Kitchen: Hoyo’s northeast side restaurant is currently closed, but you can visit their stall inside North Market for carryout. I love their sambusas, chicken or beef suqaar, and especially the safari chicken. Keep an eye on the North Market’s site to see current hours and which vendors are open.

Service Bar: One of our favorite restaurants in town, Service Bar, has switched to carryout Wednesdays to Saturdays, 11a-8p. Keep up with the week’s offerings on the @secretkitchenmenu Instagram feed. Order through their website or by calling 614-947-1231, option 1. EDIT: Service Bar is pausing service for a couple days between Apr. 2-5.

Sammy’s New York Bagels: this local bagel shop is already geared toward home delivery. They craft New York-style bagels, pastries, and are now offering Luck Bros coffee, too. They’re delivering seven days a week – just place your order by 3 p.m. for the following morning!

Tommy’s Diner: this classic, family-run diner has still been cranking out comfort foods via carryout or delivery. They’re open 9a-1:30p, Mon-Fri and 8:30a-2p on weekends. They’re also offering family four-pack meals, so you can feed your whole crew!

Way Down Yonder: order up Creole favorites like gumbo, red beans and rice, po’ boys. They’re open from noon to 7:30 p.m. daily. Place orders at (614) 662-8623 and pick up your meal at their drive-through window!

The Whitney House: located in Old Worthington, the Whitney House is offering its homestyle meals for lunch (Mon-Fri, 11a-1p) and dinner (Mon-Sat, 5-8p). Place orders by calling (614) 396-7846.

Of course these aren’t the only places you can support! Keep up with my page on Supporting Local Food-Makers, the Support Columbus Eats spreadsheet, or Columbus Navigator’s list of 70+ restaurants.
